PACE & ACE Windermere trip Sept 14-17 2009

The PACE & ACE group recently went on their residential trip to the Lake district, as a way of immersing themselves to different experiences, and taking them out of their comfort zones.
From the offset the group were keen to spend some time away from their friends and family. Also to experience new activities, and at the same time increase their confidence and self esteem.
After a few false starts, and various members of the group dropping out, the ACE group managed to book some accommodation, and outdoor activities with the Bendrigg trust - an organisation set up to help young people with physical and mental difficulties. The trust was extremely helpful in organising the trip and making it a memorable experience.
We arrived at Fell End lodge after a tiring 3 and a half hour trip up to the accommodation, situated just outside of Sedbergh in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. When we finally got to there we were blown away by the panoramic views from the bunkhouse, and also the silence and isolation. The ACE group revelled in the location and it wasn’t long before the volunteers were walking across the barren moors to take advantage of the spectacular views, and also the great thermal up drafts, as one of the volunteers – Sean was a keen Kite flyer, and rides Kite Buggies in his spare time. His kite caused quite a stir in the group, and his patience and good instruction meant that all the group managed to have a go at flying the kite with various degrees of mastery!
By the end of day 1 all the group were extremely tired, and after a well earned spaghetti bolognaise, expertly cooked by Christian, the volunteers retired to bed very worn out.
On Tuesday the group had a full day of learning Bush craft skills to look forward to, and this is what happened:-
Bush Craft
When I originally booked this Bush craft day I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect. Were we going to be like Ray Mears, skinning rabbits, or cooking moose on hot coals, or were we going to be exposed to the Bear Grylls way of life where we dived into frozen rivers, and jogged 50 km’s through mosquito ridden swamps. Luckily it wasn’t the Bear Grylls side, phew! but it was definitely more Ray Mears, and definitely a lot of fun! As soon as we arrived in camp, which is set in a beautiful pine forest, set on the far banks of Lake Winderemere, we had to make fire, and properly. We all failed miserably at this task, but we learnt very quickly how to make a fire properly, and this lesson will stick with me for a long time to come. Throughout the rest of the day we made some Banock cakes that we then ate. Tracked foxes and squirrels, ate wild berries and mushrooms, and even made fire from wood. Not only do I feel like a proper caveman but the whole group thoroughly enjoyed the whole day and we were all sad to see it come to an end! Stephen was a great instructor, who delivered at just the right level, and the day has made us all want to learn more about how to survive in the wild. Bear Grylls, eat your heart out! And maybe a snake too! 5 out of 5 – Brilliant!
Thursday and Friday were also two activity packed days, with expert instruction carried out on a range of subjects, from Kayaking to Rock climbing, Abseiling, Orientation and the use of Zip wires at Bendrigg lodge.
The Bendrigg trust did an excellent job of keeping the group interested and on task, and made the week better then ever expected.
All in all the trip was a great success, but I think I’ll need a weeks holiday just to recover!

Positve steps for Andy at the Green project!

hello everyone

Sine PACE joined the green project in Great Hatfield, we have had a lot of positive feedback from a good number of workers on the farm which really justifies everything we are all trying to achieve. of course we listen to the negative feedback too as we want to hear suggestions and ideas about the future and how we approach it. it is a great thing that people can come together and be part of something that is bigger than themselves and have the opportunity to work together to create a positive environment, not just for themselves, but for many to follow. i hope the green project can keep growing from strength to strength.Green project worker Andy 24, from Hull kindly writes;

"I joined PACE at the Green Project in March 2009, after three years of unemployment and isolation due to a severe anxiety disorder and I can honestly say that it has been one of the most important steps I have taken on my road to recovery.

The Project provides a relaxed environment, in which you work alongside friendly people from all sorts of backgrounds, on tasks that give you a real sense of achievement. It’s immensely satisfying to look back at the end of a day and see the progress you’ve made clearing ground for a new vegetable patch, or planting trees for an area of native woodland. Much is said of the sense of well being fostered from working close to nature and it really is true.

The farm is steadily evolving; we have recently constructed a pond and installed some bee hives. There are many other plans to develop the farm in the coming months and it is an exciting time to be involved. I would recommend the project to anyone looking to make a positive change in their life".

i hope we recieve more good news stories like these as i look forward to more days at the farm. i hope if you or anyone you may know may benefit from a project like this one, that you come and visit, we always welcome visitors.
take good care

DISC GOLF with Christian (PACE)

Hi guys
first time blog from me so here we go. i wanted to keep anyone who wishes top follow the PACE project informed so please come visit from time to time to see what i have been up to.
at the moment i am very excited about getting my DISC GOLF project off the ground (pun intended ahem...). i only got the baskets installed just over a month ago but already i'm hooked. i usually spend the summer playing golf...but for now that is on the back burner. 2009 is all about disc golf!
it has not been easy getting this course into Hall Garth Park, Hornsea, but after some very kind advice and guidance from Hornsea Town Council, we have finally got there, or thereabouts. the new 9 baskets course is looking wonderful and in comparison to courses around the UK, it has to rated as one of the prettiest.
i understand that disc golf is not to everyone tastes but it does have a lotn to offer. equipment is cheap (pro disc at around £7), the course is free to play and its easy to learn, just about anybody can play! the course is now available to play 24/7 so i am not worried if its popularity isn't quite at its peak yet. things do take time and i'm prepared to be patient. meanwhile however, i will be taking community groups onto the park over October and November to teach the basic rules and techniques of disc golf (even though i'm no pro yet but do have the knack if i do say so myself). please come join me and others on the park. i'll let you know when i'm there, or if you wish, contact me and i can meet you there if you need showuing the ropes.

thanks for now and watch this space (please)

Hornsea Disc Golf
9 basket Disc golf course, Hall Garth Park

Hull and East Yorkshire Mind is delighted with the successful introduction of Disc Golf to Hall Garth Park.
People and Community Exercise (PACE), a project led by Hull & East Yorkshire Mind and funded by the Big Lottery, have introduced the popular American craze of Disc Golf to Hornsea which has produced some positive feedback says community project worker Christian Sansam. Its aim is to provide the residents of Hull and the East Yorkshire with an alternative, inexpensive way of getting the recommended levels of daily physical activity, which is a vital element when maintaining good mental health.

The new 9-basket disc golf course is now available for play and within its first month has shown signs of encouragement from the local residents claims Christian;

“I’ve spoken with many residents about the new course and I have been pleased with the response so far. Families have been out playing which is a really good sign and visitors from surrounding towns have enjoyed themselves. It’s a really addictive sport and we love it, I hope others will do too!”

The exercise initiative led by Mind has worked alongside Hornsea Town Council to bring disc golf to the area. With guidance from professional disc golf course designers (Catch the Spirit), all parties have worked together to design a course that is both user friendly and challenging. The new course will become East Yorkshire’s premier disc golf venue and now joins as one of only 20 courses throughout the UK (www.bdga.org.uk). Plans to include the course as part of professional UK disc golf tours are being proposed with ambitions to host regional and national disc golf events.

PACE is also working with local schools and community groups with the intention of adding disc golf as part of physical education and activity schedules. Amanda Stamp, Head of physical education at Hornsea high School, who took part in a disc golf demonstration held by PACE earlier this year added;

“I personally think that disc golf will be well received. Equipment is inexpensive which can so often alienate youngsters from being able to participate within certain sporting activities, and anything that gets youngsters up and active can only be a good thing.”

PACE have introduced disc golf because of the many benefits the sport has to offer. It is a low intensity activity which accommodates a wide range of people young and old. Participating in a physical activity over a sustained period of time can help prevent mental health problems and also assist in their recovery.

“We would love to get a disc golf club up and running soon. There are endless opportunities for this course to inspire many things but we’ll need community champions and volunteers to get it off the ground”.

Professional discs are available for hire with a small refunded deposit (£2/disc) from the Beach Hut CafĂ©, located on Cliff road, Hornsea. There are 3 main types of disc; distance driver, mid-range and putter. New players will find that throwing a distance driver accurately is somewhat challenging at first, so beginners should maybe try a mid-range or putting disc for better flight. Good luck and happy bidding!

Notes for the Editor

History of disc golf
Disc golf (also known as Discgo) is a game in which individuals throw a flying disc into a basket or target. The concept is based loosely around traditional golf, where the object of the game is to traverse the course from beginning to end in the fewest numbers of shots.
Disc golf, as we know it today, was created by an American called George Sappenfield of Pasadena, California during the 1960’s after his invention of the first formal disc golf target (the Mach 1) using a basket and chains. Before this time, Sappenfield had been using targets such as lamp poles and fire hydrants, but for his first tournament (Thousand Oaks Park, California 1968) he used hula hoops as targets, which were kindly donated by the Wham-O™ Frisbee organisation (www.bdga.org.uk, 2009)
Since then participation levels in disc golf have increased steadily and according to the British Disc Golf Association (BDGA) it now has a reported growth of almost 15 percent per year in approximately 40 countries. It is said that in the USA and North America, one round out of every five rounds of golf, is disc golf. (www.pdga.com, 2009)

PACE & Time to Change
Time to Change is England's most ambitious programme to end the discrimination face by people who experience mental health problems, as well as improve the nation's wellbeing.
Mind, Mental Health Media and Rethink are leading this programme of 35 projects, funded with £18m from the Big Lottery Fund and Comic Relief and evaluated by the Institute of Psychiatry at King's College, London.
The programme is founded on an international evidence base, and has people with direct experience of mental health problems at its heart. Local community projects work alongside a national high-profile campaign, a mass participation physical activity week, legal test cases, training for student doctors and teachers and a network of grassroots activists combating discrimination.
We aim to work in partnership with all sectors and communities in order to tackle a long lingering taboo and one of the greatest social injustices. Find out more information on the national Mind website at www.time-to-change.org.uk
PACE has engaged over 500 people in sport and physical activity since it started in March 2008. PACE is part of the national time to change campaign to end mental health discrimination and is funded by the Big Lottery.
PACE is funded to work within the Holderness region of the East Riding.
The PACE project relies heavily on the work done by volunteers and asks the communities to consider getting involved. PACE is keen to establish a disc golf club and asks potential members to contact Hull & East Yorkshire Mind;
